My Ethereum to Bitcoin Swap Experience on Kraken

Today is October 31st, 2025, and I just completed another Ethereum to Bitcoin swap. I’ve been actively involved in cryptocurrency trading for about three years now, and swapping between ETH and BTC has become a fairly regular part of my strategy. I wanted to share my personal experience, as the process can seem daunting to newcomers.

Why I Swapped & The Current Market

I decided to swap a portion of my Ethereum holdings for Bitcoin today because, frankly, I believe Bitcoin is poised for a short-term price increase. I’ve been watching the market closely, and while Ethereum is also doing well – the information I saw indicated 1 ETH is currently worth around 0.036 BTC – I felt a rebalancing of my portfolio was prudent. I remember a few months back, the rate was closer to 0.035, so I was happy to get a slightly better rate now.

It’s important to note, as I’ve learned the hard way, that these rates fluctuate constantly. I read that over the last week, the exchange rate has been a bit volatile, with a 2.56% fall recently, but a slight increase in the last 24 hours. The market cap for both coins is massive – Ethereum around 498.63B and Bitcoin at 2.28T – which means significant swings are less common, but still possible.

The Platform I Used: Kraken

I chose to use Kraken for this swap. I’ve used several platforms – Coinbase, Binance, and even some of the decentralized exchanges (DEXs) – but I find Kraken consistently offers competitive rates and a relatively user-friendly interface. I created a free account a while ago, which was a straightforward process. Verification took a couple of days, but that’s standard for security reasons.

The Swap Process – Step-by-Step

  1. Login and Navigate: I logged into my Kraken account and navigated to the “Trade” section.
  2. Select the Pair: I selected the ETH/BTC trading pair. This is crucial! Double-check you’ve chosen the correct pair.
  3. Choose Order Type: I opted for a “Market Order.” This means I was willing to accept the current market price, which is the fastest way to execute the swap. You can also use “Limit Orders” if you want to specify a price, but those aren’t guaranteed to fill.
  4. Enter Amount: I entered the amount of ETH I wanted to swap – in this case, 5 ETH. The platform immediately displayed the estimated BTC I would receive, which was around 0.1792 BTC, aligning with the current rate I had researched.
  5. Review and Confirm: I carefully reviewed the details – the amount of ETH, the estimated BTC, and the fees. Kraken’s fees are relatively low, but they’re still important to consider.
  6. Confirm the Transaction: I confirmed the transaction. Kraken required a two-factor authentication code from my authenticator app, adding an extra layer of security.

Post-Swap & Things I Learned

The swap executed almost instantly. I checked my Kraken wallet, and the BTC was there! It really was that simple. However, I did notice a small difference between the estimated amount and the final amount received due to the platform fees. It was minimal, but it’s a good reminder to always factor in those costs.

I also used a price calculator before making the swap, as recommended. It helped me confirm I was getting a fair rate. I found TabTrader’s calculator to be quite accurate, showing a rate of around 0.03642581 BTC per ETH at the time.

Important Considerations:

  • Volatility: The crypto market is incredibly volatile. The rate can change in seconds.
  • Fees: Always check the platform’s fees before executing a swap.
  • Security: Use a secure platform with two-factor authentication.
  • Wallet Security: Protect your wallet credentials!

Final Thoughts

Swapping ETH to BTC is a relatively straightforward process, especially with user-friendly platforms like Kraken. However, it’s crucial to do your research, understand the risks, and prioritize security. I, Amelia Stone, have found it to be a valuable tool in managing my cryptocurrency portfolio, but it’s not without its complexities. I hope my experience helps anyone considering making a similar swap!
